West Orange Boys Soccer Knocks Off Second Seeded Memorial

By JAKE KLEIN

November 6, 2013 at 1:47 AM

WEST ORANGE, NJ -  It was a tall order for the West Orange boys soccer team. They traveled to West New York to battle it out with the second seed Memorial High School in their first round of North 1, Group 4 Tournament play.  However, fifteenth-seeded West Orange set the tone early with a blistering shot coming in the first ten minutes off the foot of senior Garett Mulinge who was fed by junior Andrew Banout. In the end, the victory was theirs as they outscored Memorial 2-1.

Going into the second half up 1-0, West Orange continued their momentum with another goal. Senior Ian Faloye headed a perfectly placed free kick from Banout before Senior Michael Vargas finished the job, placing the ball in the net and putting West Orange up 2-0.

The boys could not preserve the shutout however, as Alex Garcia scored a  Memorial goal in the second half with about 20 minutes  remaining. Strong defense from Faloye and fellow senior Michael Zarro, along with an 8-save performance from junior keeper Josh Feinblatt any further chance for Memorial to score, and the game ended with a 2-1 victory. Mark Giron made 18 saves for Memorial throughout the game.

“The guys played great tonight,” said head coach Doug Nevins. “In the second half we went up 2-0 and after Memorial scored we played well to hang on for the win on the road.”

The West Orange boys soccer team will travel to Livingston on Friday to take on the Lancers at 2 P.M. in the second round of the North 1 Group 4 playoffs.
