LAKE HOPATCONG, NJ - Dan Thomas is a Lake Hopatcong resident who said the area has been special to he and his family, and wanted to start a business close to home.
He and his wife Debra, along with their children Kyle, age 11, and Sara, age 9, have been involved in town with recreational activities, sports, and church.
Dan considered the idea of a store where customers could be provided with shipping and other services. Dan consulted with a friend, who is a driver with UPS, who suggested the idea of PostNet.
His friend told him about the PostNet location in nearby Denville, which he described to Dan as, "busy, doing a lot there, and a good business model."
"With my first call to PostNet, I was very pleased with their vision for the future, and decided this was something I'd like to do," Dan said.
"I saw there was a need here [in Jefferson and the surrounding communities], and I was very pleased with what PostNet had to offer," he continued.
Dan's previous background had been in video production, a career he has continued to be involved in for the last 25 years, and also worked for eight years with the Daily Record as a Single Copy Manager. He has additionally purchased and renovated rental properties for resale.
Debra, who works as a partner in the business, and works as she can, handling the bookkeeping while caring for their children, has her background as a certified medical assistant for a group of pulmonologists.
PostNet offered Dan the support to get his business, which celebrated its one-year anniversary in August, off the ground.
He took graphic design courses prior to beginning, as well as training in domestic and international shipping preparations.
"Each PostNet gives a lot of flexibility and a strong basic framework in how to tailor the business within the community," Dan said.
Along with Steve Geary, who does the bulk of the graphic design for the business, and Wendy Asplund, who oversees the store and works on basic graphic design and all types of print projects, Dan describes the business as offering, "business cards to banners, and everything in between."
Some other print projects are: sell sheets, brochures, trade show displays, banners, canvas prints, signs, and business forms (two to three part carbonless forms).
One of the other special print offerings PostNet provides is the "Phathead", a life-sized wall graphic made of vinyl fabric. The "Phathead" is a full-sized photo from child-sized to adult, up to seven feet tall.
In the store are pictures of several children in their school sport photos. Dan suggested a parent could have "Phathead" images created of their child at different stages of their growth, and then display them around a room in their home.
PostNet can also print out blueprint copies for architects and contractors.
They can also coordinate other types of print jobs, including wedding invitations with embossing and raised foils, canvas prints, custom posters, photo montages, and custom calendars.
During the holiday season, PostNet specializes in holiday cards, including fold over types, for individuals and businesses.
"There's a lot of variety of stock, and custom cards," said Dan.
"What sets us apart from other printers and stores is we're not afraid to do small jobs," Dan said.
And of course, PostNet will take on medium and large jobs.
"We can often turn things around the next day, or same day," Dan said. "We'll do our best to meet everyone's timeline. And the vast majority of the printing we can do in house.”
"We're your neighborhood business center," Dan said. "There's a template set in place that each owner has flexibility to cater to the local market, and its needs.”
PostNet also offers web design, and social media management services. There are a variety of packages, and with each, when a client provides the graphics, and text they would like on their website within five days of speaking to one of the store's website experts, Dan said the site will be up and running within 30 days. Websites include one free hour of maintenance every month.
"It [web design] complements the other things we do," Dan added.
One of the other services the PostNet in Jefferson offers is Dan and Wendy are both Notary Publics, and can handle the process of notarizing documents.
Something else that sets the store apart is the offering of shipping options, including the ability for customers to select from FedEx, UPS, DHL, and the U.S. Postal Service (USPS).
“There are lots of options they may not get in other stores,” Dan said. “It gives the customer the widest amount of options.”
The local PostNet is an international shipping specialist because of the alternatives they have under one roof.
“International shipping can be kind of tricky with customs, restrictions, and requirements,” said Dan.
Currently, the store is offering a holiday promotion, of free gift wrapping for every item shipped.
PostNet specializes in custom packaging, or a customer can also ship an item out in their own box.
"We will make sure it [a shipment] gets there safely," Dan said.
Along the lines of shipping and mailing, PostNet can also provide a business with a physical business address at their location with their own postal box.
“It gives your business a physical address and suite number, and it’s completely private,” said Dan.
This type of privacy is important for business owners who may be running their operations from their homes.
“This privacy for our customers is important, and may give them a way to separate their home from their business,” he said.
For all your printing, shipping, and graphic design needs, visit the PostNet Store conveniently located on Route 15 South and Bowling Green Parkway (Suite 13) in Lake Hopatcong. Their hours of operation are Mondays through Fridays, 7am to 6pm, and Saturdays, 9am to 1pm.
“Whenever you’re thinking a project, think PostNet,” Dan concluded.
