Summit Hockey Dominates Governor Livingston 10-0

By TIM LECRAS

February 5, 2013 at 10:31 PM

ELIZABETH, N.J. - The Summit hockey team continued its dominance over Union County on Tuesday, beating rival Governor Livingston, 10-0, at Warinanco Skating Center.

The Hilltoppers improved to 11-2-3 on the year, sweeping the season series with the Highlanders by a scoring margin of 21-1.

"It was a good game," Summit goaltender Garrett McGowan said. "I didn't get much action. The team played great. Liam played great, four points I think. It was just a good team effort tonight."

All 10 of Summit's goals came in chunks. Chris Zanello, Whit Cummings and Tommy Kane each scored during a three-minute stretch midway through the first period.

In the second, Cummings and forward Liam McLaughlin scored within 30 seconds of each other in the eighth minute of the period, before Joe Jacobello scored two goals in the final two minutes of the frame to give the Hilltoppers a 7-0 lead after two periods.

Zanelli, McLaughlin and Mike Badgley each scored in the fifth minute of the third period to end the game via the "mercy rule."

"We came out here and played Summit hockey," Badgley said. "It was fun."

Defensively, Summit never allowed the Highlanders any type of sustained pressure in the game. Keeping shots away from McGowan.

"Garrett's one of our best players, if not the best," Badgley said. "He definitely keeps us in a lot of games. Without him this year, its a completely different team. He has a championship already, so theres not a lot of words you can say about him. He's a great goalie."

With only a few weeks before the Union County and state tournaments, Summit sits in prime position to make a deep run in both championships.

Both McGowan and Badgley won both during last year's season.

While McGowan said it will be business as usual for the Hilltoppers, Badgley has a little bit more on his shoulders. The senior captain is looking to become the first Summit student-athlete to win four state championship titles.

He has won a football, ice hockey and lacrosse championship during his time with the Hilltoppers.

"Its in the back of your mind, you want to get that fourth and be the first person at Summit to do that," Badgley said. "Its always a team effort. Its going to be a tough competition whether its Cranford or Westfield or any other Union County team, Scotch Plains. We're going to come out and show them that we're going to states and we're going to be a threat. We have to get through Union County first than states, but its going to be a fun ride."
