ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Westfield High School’s Matt Barber and Nick Velez each placed in the top 6 of their respective weight classes during the 2014 NJSIAA Wrestling State Finals at Boardwalk Hall on Sunday.

Westfield’s 145 pound entrant, Barber, fell to Southern Regional’s Zack Wilhelm, while Velez defeated North Hunterdon’s Mike Ciavarro for fifth place in the 152 pound weight class.

Barber trailed 2-1 after the first period, then went scoreless in the second to go down 5-1. He made a late push to try and force overtime in the third by scoring three points in the final 30 seconds. However, his push fell just short, falling by a 6-4 decision to take sixth place.

In the 152 pound fifth place match, Velez led 2-1 after the first 3 minute period. Ciavarro tied the match with a 1 pt. escape in the middle frame. However, Velez recaptured the lead with his own reversal in the third to secure a top 5 finish.

The Alternative Press of Westfield would like to congratulate both Matt Barber and Nick Velez for their successful state finish.
