WEST ORANGE, NJ - Friday night proved to be another great community and school spirit event at the West Orange Mountaineers Homecoming game. With a 30-29 win over the Nutley Raiders, the Mountaineers celebrated their victory, along with the newly named Homecoming King and Queen.
Suriano Stadium was lit up for the annual event that was rescheduled from October 11 due to inclimate weather. Homecoming king and queen nominees endured an antagonizing week waiting for the results to be announced.
The Homecoming Court consisted of three senior nominated boys and girls. Seniors voted Kosi Amaefuna for King, while Chris Hanley and Dylan Pennell were runners up. Kelly Parisi was crowned Queen, and Christina Jackson and Jade Remar were runners up. In addition, Miquel Patino and Katherine Amaya were crowned as the honorary homecoming King and Queen.
“It was an absolute honor to be nominated by the staff and faculty, and I was thrilled to be voted homecoming queen by my peers. It was truly an experience I’ll never forget,” said Parisi.
Principal Hayden Moore and the senior class advisors presented all nominees with a sash and flowers. Amaefuna and Parisi celebrated their crowning with an honorary ride in the decorated golf cart around the field.
Seniors at West Orange High School voted during school, though the final results were announced during halftime. Nominees were chosen by following the criteria: exhibits outstanding character traits and is an upstanding school citizen, participates in school life with a sense of school pride and unification, demonstrates scholarship, leadership and fellow ship at WOHS, and respected by both the senior class and teaching staff.
A pre-game tailgate marked the beginning of the homecoming celebrations, followed by annual Senior Recognition before kickoff. Halftime consisted of a performance by Nutley cheerleaders and crowning of the King and Queen.
