WEST ORANGE, NJ - Charles Goldberg, 60, a West Orange resident and internist with a practice located at 127 Pine St. in Montclair, on Wednesday plead guilty in Newark Federal Court to accepting bribes in exchange for test referrals as part of a long-running scheme by Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services LLC (BLS) of Parsippany. The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman.

According to Fishman, 23 people, 12 who were physicians, have pleaded guilty to participating in the scheme which generated over $100 million in revenues to BLS from Medicare and private insurance companies.

Goldberg admitted to accepting bribes of $1,800 per month via a fake lease agreement with BLS, which identified the waiting room, bathroom and one examination room in Goldberg’s office as being leased.

Goldberg faces a maximum potential penalty of five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. He has agreed to forfeit $58,000, purportedly the total amount of bribes he received from BLS.

To date, the BLS investigation has recovered over $7 million in forfeitures.

A sentencing date for Goldberg has not yet been announced.
