WEST ORANGE, NJ - Graduating seniors at West Orange High School received a record amount of scholarship monies during Senior Awards Night last Thursday.
Each year, seniors apply for both individual scholarships and scholarships through the West Orange Scholarship Foundation. National, state, county, and local organizations and families provide those scholarships. The recipients receive the scholarship money directly or applied to their tuition.
The evening began with Senior Student Council Awards and the Principal's Award for school service. Military-based awards followed, and Commander John Ennis, United States Navy Reserves, Retired, presented senior Dylan Pennell with his appointment to the United States Naval Academy.
Other local organization awards, including the Betty Maddalena Award, Horatio Alger Award, and Daughety Memorial Scholarships, were distributed.
The West Orange Scholarship Foundation then took to the stage and awarded a record $55,000 in Scholarships. "This is the fourth year in a row that we have increased the total amount of awards," said WOSF President Rich Rizzolo.
"With the Parisi Scholarship Event on May 9, the West Orange Scholarship Foundation reached the $1,000,000 mark in the amount of money raised since 1927," he continued. Fifth-eight awards from local organizations and families were distributed.
Academic recognition was then given. The Principal's Awards for Academic Achievment in various disciplines were acknowledged, followed by departmental awards, national, and presidential scholar awards.
After distribution of National Honor Society cords, Susannah Crowell was announced as Class Valedictorian and Emily Adelsohn as Class Salutatorian.
The Alternative Press will update this article with a complete list of recipients once it is received from the West Orange School District.
