WEST ORANGE, NJ - On May 1, West Orange Board of Education members Laura Lab and Michelle Casalino were presented with certificates acknowledging them as Board Certified Board Members from the New Jersey School Board Association, at a ceremony held at Glen Ridge Country Club.
The New Jersey School Boards Association is a federation of boards of education that provides training, advocacy and support to advance public education and promote the achievement of all students through effective governance.
The Certificated Board Member is the first tier of the NJSBA Board Member Academy certification program. Areas of study are designed to give members a firm foundation in the essential governance skills needed to carry out their responsibilities. To receive this certification, board members must attend academy programs in at least four of the CBM (Certified Board Member) core areas and meet all of the CBM requirements including Sustainability/STEM, Advocacy, Communications, Labor Relations, Finance, Leadership, Governance, Student Achievement, and Legal/Policy.
Certificated Board Member are required to: accumulate at least twenty credits; attend at least two county meetings; attend at least one Annual NJSBA Workshop; attend at least one NJSBA Delegate Assembly; complete at least one term on their local board and must not be adjudicated to have violated the School Ethics Act.
