SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ - Here is a look at how the Scotch Plains-Fanwood varsity sports teams have fared over the last week:
Boys Soccer: The Scotch Plains-Fanwood (SPF) boys soccer team went 1-0-1 this week making their season record 7-3-1. On Thursday, the Raiders blew out Cranford, 8-1. Justin Rodriquez scored in the fifth minute of the game off an assist from James Murphy to set the tone and the Raiders never looked back. The Raiders scored four goals in the first half of the game and four in the second half. Christian Isolda scored two goals for the Raiders, his first two varsity goals. On Saturday, SPF played Hunterdon Central and after two overtimes, the score was 1-1 giving the team their first tie of the season. James Murphy scored the only goal for the Raiders in the first half. Hunterdon Central struck back scoring a goal to even the score in the second half. The next game for the Raiders is at Elizabeth on October 10th.
Girls Soccer: The SPF girls’ soccer team went 2-0 this week. On Tuesday the Raiders played Gov. Livingston and won, 5-1. Tori Baliatico had a hat trick in the game and Kelly Yeager led Scotch Plains with two assists. The other two goals for SPF were scored by Sarah DiIori and Katie Harper. On Thursday, the Raiders traveled to Oak Knoll and came out with a 4-2 win. Baliatico, Corina Checchio, Paige Heiden and Jillian Lapidus each scored one goal. Harper led the team in assists with two. With the two wins this week, Scotch Plains improved their record to 10-0 and their next game is at Westfield on Oct. 8.
Football: The Raiders at Voorhees, 42-21, on Friday. SPF fell behind, 21-0, for the second straight game. Scotch Plains got on the board in the second quarter when running back Sam McQuoid ran for a 10-yard touchdown. Quarterback Emendo Thomas then ran for a 72-yard touchdown run to make the score 21-14. Voorhees scored one more touchdown before the first half ended on a five yard run to make the score 28-14 at halftime. Voorhees scored again in the third quarter to make the score 35-14. In the fourth quarter, Voorhees returned an interception for a 29 yard touchdown. Running back Kobe White for SPF scored on a 47 yard to make the score 42-21. For the Raiders, it was their second straight loss dropping their record to 1-3. The team will look to end their losing streak at North Plainfield on Oct. 11.
Girls Gymnastics: The gymnastics team went 1-1 this week. The team started off their week against South Brunswick and lost 105.35-105.4. This was the team’s third loss this season losing by a point or less. Abby Spector finished second in the Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise. On Tuesday, the Raiders beat Dayton 99.2 to 52.65. Lauren Lockfeld took the Vault for SPF with a score of 8.85. Emma Kowalczyk scored an 8.1 on the Uneven Bars which was enough to win the event for SPF. Heather Mullen took the Balance Beam for Scotch Plains with a score of 8.2. On the Floor Exercise event, Keara Farley scored an 8.75 to win it for the Raiders. After going 1-1 this week, the team’s record is 5-4 and will compete against Cranford on October 8th.
Girls Tennis: The Scotch Plains girls’ tennis team went 1-2 this week. The Raiders won this first match 4-1 against Mount St. Mary on Monday. Sophia Di Iorio won second singles for SPF in straight sets. Madison Dieu won third singles in straight sets as well. Olivia and Sophia TumSuden won first doubles in straight sets. Nikita Nirmal and Maggie Richard won second doubles in straight sets for SPF. On Tuesday, SPF competed against Oak Knoll and lost 4-1. Dieu won third singles in straight sets. Scotch Plains traveled to J.P. Stevens on Friday and lost 5-0. The tennis team’s record is 2-9 and will travel to Peddie on Monday.
Girls Volleyball: The SPF volleyball team won both of their matches this week improving their record to 9-2. On Tuesday, the Raiders defeated Woodbridge in straight sets. The team won their match on Thursday at Plainfield in straight sets as well. The volleyball team has only dropped 5 sets this whole season. Isabella Krempa leads SPF in aces with 21 and assists with 143. Brooke Enners leads the team in kills with 85. Shannon Rielly leads the team in digs with 58. Their next match is against Johnson on Oct. 8.
Boys Cross Country: The Scotch Plains-Fanwood boys cross country team lost their only meet this week to Westfield on Tuesday 33-22. Alex Livernois finished first in the 5133 meter run with a time of 17 minutes and four seconds. The loss was the first one for the team and now has a record of 3-1. Their next meet is Oct. 8 against Plainfield.
Girls Cross Country: The SPF girls cross country team had one meet this week and lost to Westfield 48-15. Kailyn Reilly finished first in the 5133 meter run with a time of 21 minutes and 13 seconds. The loss drops the team’s record to 2-2. Their next meet is against Plainfield on October 8.
Trevor Skanes is a senior at Scotch Plains Fanwood High School and has a passion for the field of journalism. This is his third year on staff at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School’s newspaper, The Fanscotian. Trevor was the sports editor last year and now is one of the editors-in-chiefs for the newspaper. Last year, Trevor won an award from GSSPA, for best news story in division B in the state of New Jersey. For the school year 2013-2014, Trevor will be the sports editor of the Scotch Plains Edition of the Alternative Press and will write the SPFHS Sports Wrap Up every week.
