SPARTA, NJ - There are six candidates who have turned in Nominating Petitions to the Sussex County Clerk’s office to run for Sparta Board of Education. As of the 4 p.m. deadline on Monday, July 28 the candidates are:
- Kylen C. Anderson,
- Michael Aloi,
- Richard F. Bladek,
- Melva A. Cummings,
- Carey Anne Gluck-Bomensatt and
- Douglas Mc Kernan
Anderson has served on the Sparta Education Foundation since 2007, including two years as President from 2010 to 2012.
Aloi has been a Certified Financial Planner with Summit Financial Resources, Inc since 1999.
Bladek is seeking a second term, having been elected in 2011. He was the Vice President of the board with Frank Favichia in 2013.
Cummings was a music teacher in the Sparta schools and past President of the Sparta Education Association until she retired in 2009.
Gluck-Bomensatt is a parent in the district who served on the PTO of Mohawk Avenue School.
Mc Kernan has served on the board of education in Sparta from 2010 through 2013. He was defeated by a mere 41 votes last November.
The Sparta Board of Education election will be November 4. In previous years the school board elections in New Jersey were held in April. That changed in 2012 when the state allowed districts to change their elections to November. Most districts have chosen to move their elections due to the provision that eliminated the requirement to have the budget approved by voters. Districts that aligned their elections with other local, state and national elections in November were no longer required to have the budget approved.
