SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – About six years ago three college buddies sat in a dorm room at Rutgers University and had an idea: Open a chain of sub shops that uses the best ingredients available, and serve the subs at a fair price in a clean environment with a smile.
Fast forward to 2014, and the concept is more than an idea. The three are partners now, and after opening their first shop in South Plainfield, they’ve opened three others.
This weekend, Mr. Subs celebrated the grand re-opening of its original store on South Plainfield Avenue. After closing its doors on Super Bowl Sunday, the shop re-opened Wednesday with new décor, an updated look, and an expanded menu. And so far the reviews are positive.
“It looks great,” said Mayor Matt Anesh after cutting a ribbon to officially re-open the eatery. Anesh says he enjoys the Italian sub but recommends the hot wings too. “Those are the two things I get when I go.”
After beginning in South Plainfield, Mr. Subs opened next in New Brunswick. There’s two more now, one in Rahway and one in Cranbury.
The idea is to grow the business by offering the best subs around. “We hope to keep expanding throughout New Jersey so our fellow residents can see what Mr. Subs’ hype is all about,” said Dipen Patel, one of the three original owners.
To keep growing, Patel says he and his partners will keep the focus on the customer. “We love our customers just as much as we love serving the best subs around,” he said.
As part of the re-opening Mr. Subs will be giving ten percent off to anyone who signs up on its Twitter page. In addition, senior citizens get ten percent off on Mondays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and students who show a high-school ID get the same deal Mondays to Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The shop also plans to keep being active in the community. According to Jill Ryan, who handles the shops’ marketing, nonprofits can contact her to plan fundraisers where groups can earn 15% of sales on pre-planned nights. "It's Mr. Subs' way of giving back," she said.
Mr. Subs in South Plainfield is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. 4 p.m.
