CHATHAM, NJ - Growing up in Maplewood, Ty Monk always had the desire to fix, repair and build things. Five years ago, he took that love and started Monk’s Home Improvements.
Since the age of 14, Monk has been Mr. Fix It, he said. He started out part-time helping his neighbor with jobs, continued in high school and it helped pay his way through college. Monk eventually left school and became a self-employed contractor.
He enjoyed working on his own in his early 20s because of the freedom and he made his own schedule, he said. He then worked for a company for a brief time, but he likes things his way, so he left and started Monk’s in 2007.
“When we started out I literally spent every dime I had to get the business started,” Monk said.
Monk's Home Improvements renovates homes and paint interior and exteriors in: Madison, Chatham, Florham Park, Morristown, Livingston, Westfield, Summit, Harding, Short Hills, Basking Ridge, New Providence and Bernardsville. He started the company with his wife, Viviane. They have 50 employees and a small office staff.
They specialize in exterior and interior painting, dustless floor refinishing, exterior carpentry, kitchen, attic, basement and bathroom renovation, new decks, deck re-facing with composite (keep the existing framing), trim repair and window and door replacement and installation.
Since they started five years ago, business has been amazing, he said. Even when the market crashed, they were only minimally affected, Monk said. Working on homes instead of businesses has its perks, he said.
“It’s a different type of work,” he said. “I think this is more challenging. When you are in a house, you are in the most personal place you can be.”
Monk’s Home Improvements has become well known in the area. The majority of their work is either repeat customers or through referrals.
“We’re very customer service-oriented,” he said.
Leaving a client unsatisfied simply isn’t an option, Monk said. If something breaks or there is a problem after they finish a job, they always return and repair it, he said.
The best part of Monk's is its location and the closeness of the people that work there, he said. In addition to his wife, his brother and neighbor work there, as well. Furthermore, because of the many services they provide, Monk said there isn’t a company in the area that can compete with them.
“In my opinion this is the greatest place in the world,” he said. “I wouldn’t work anywhere else.”
Monk’s Home Improvements is located at 368 Main St. Chatham, NJ.
