SOUTH ORANGE-MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Superbowl XLVIII kicks off at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, Sunday, but if you aren't one of the lucky few who snagged a ticket, there are plenty of local places to enjoy the big game.
Restaurants and bars in South Orange and Maplewood are breaking out their Superbowl specials for all the die hard Broncos, Seahawks fans and everyone in between.
Bunny's Sports Bar
Bunny's Sports Bar at 14 West South Orange Ave will be giving out prizes and great food all game long.
“We are newly remodeled and we have 18 flat screens,” said Leslie Pognay, owner of the five-generation family business. “Every time you get a drink, you will get a raffle ticket. We call out different prizes throughout the game so everyone will walk out with a prize.”
Bunny's will be serving their $8 Superbowl platter with three pulled pork sliders, all smoked for 18 hours, meatball sliders and ribs with pasta salad, potato salad and cole slaw. Complimentary cake will also be served.
“The bartenders are a lot of fun and are always dreaming up fun drinks,” said Pognay. This year, Bunny's bartenders will be serving the Buckin' Bronco and the Screaming Seahawk. Even though the Giants did not make it this year, Pognay is still hoping for a good game, said.
Above Restaurant and Bar
Above Restaurant and Bar, located at One South Orange Ave., is serving some game-friendly dishes and drinks whether you are a football fan or beer and wing enthusiast.
“This year we are concentrating on wings and chili bowls,” said Above Chef Sam Rojas. “It's a hearty bowl of chili for a cold day.”
Chef Rojas is serving up chili with ground beef, steak, onion, peppers, tomatoes and kidney beans. Wings come in a variety of flavors including buffalo, barbecue, teriyaki and sweet chili. Fans of the game can also enjoy wood oven pizza, nachos, sandwiches and even team-themed sushi.
“We are also raffling off two $75 gift certificates,” said General Manager Mario LaVecchia. Mario's son and Assistant General Manager Robert LaVecchia is preparing some Broncos and Seahawks drinks behind the bar.
Also featured will be the "Big Game Roll" from the sushi bar; a crab salad roll topped with salmon and Avocado. Special drinks include: the Bucking Bronco - Tito's vodka with muddled orange and jalapeno and a splash of OJ; and The Hawk - Stoli vanilla, pineapple juice and a splash of melon liquor.
