MONTCLAIR, NJ - Montclair has a wonderful Saturday morning farmer’s market at the Walnut Street train station. It would stand to reason that a location as perfect as downtown Montclair on South Park Street, would be equally successful.
When asked why so few people were here, Alex Kent, the market manager, described a vicious cycle. Alex said, “People don’t know there is a new Tuesday farmer’s market so they don’t come downtown, and vendors don’t see customers so they don’t sign up.”
Mark Jenkins of Lakeside Maple Trail Mix offered up a sample of his crunchy delicious trail mix baked in pure maple syrup while neighboring vendors sold fresh produce, fruit, and bakery items.
The market runs every Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. through Thanksgiving. There is also free entertainment from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Jazz House Kids plays live music each Tuesday and the Julian Lee Quartet will be playing today.
If you miss it today, they will be there next Tuesday.
“This is a great place to be on a Tuesday afternoon. People are eating dinner at Leone’s and shopping downtown, while the music is playing,” said Alex Kent. According to Alex, the South Park Street Farmer’s Market is soon to include vendors for meats, pasta and cheese.
