Literacy Volunteers of Union County celebrated 25 years of changing lives through literacy, and raised $70,000 in support of its free student-centered tutoring program for adults struggling to read, write and speak English at its 25th Anniversary Gala held December 13 at Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains.

Nearly 170 volunteers, friends and supporters of the non-profit turned out for the fundraiser which featured Emmy Award-winning journalist Byron Pitts of CBS “60 Minutes.”   Pitts shared his extraordinary personal story of overcoming illiteracy.

Goya Foods, and organization founders Bonnie Anderson of Berkeley Heights, Karen MacQueen of California, Karen Paardecamp of Fanwood, and Donna Sandorse of Plainfield were honored at the event.

WCBS’s Christine Sloan served as the evening’s Mistress of Ceremonies.
