BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Gov. Livingston senior Lauren Jankowski officially signed her National Letter of Intent to play soccer for South Carolina on Friday, Feb. 7 at a school celebration with family, coaches, administration, teammates and friends cheering in support.
"I am proud that they [Lauren and her older sister JJ] are going to take their ability to the next level. Not a lot of kids are able to do that," said GL head soccer coach Mike Roof. "They meant so much to the program the last several years. They have had such an impact."
Jankowski, a four year starter for the Highlanders, was a two time All-Union County first team, three-time All-League and All-Area and twice named team captain. There was no doubt that Jankowski would play NCAA Division 1 soccer.
A highlight of Jankowski's four year varsity high school career was this season's 2-1 win against Scotch Plains. "Losing to them all four years while I played at GL, they had an undefeated season and we were their only loss. It was the best feeling," said Jankowski.
"Lauren has always been a technical player," said Roof. "She had such a profound impact on the program, it was quite remarkable. Lauren did everything I could possibly ask of a player," said Roof. "Without her goals, we probably wouldn't have been as successful as we were."
Lauren is the second Jankowski to sign to play at the college level, her sister Jessica plays for Quinnipiac College. Lauren's message to the youngest Jankowski sister and teammate, Riley, who is a freshman at GL: "Enjoy every practice and game with your teammates because the four years go by so quick. Also, listen to Coach Roof because he really is a great coach and knows the game."
South Carolina girls head soccer coach, Shelly Smith, welcomed Jankowski to the South Carolina soccer program in a statement on Wednesday, Feb. 5 on National Signing Day 2014. "We're excited to have her and the experience she brings to the field. She is someone that will give us a lift in the attacking third," said Smith. "Opportunistic in front of the goal. She knows how to find chances, scores goals. She will compliment our forwards that are returning."
