To the editor:
Although our media abound with tales of dire things happening in New Jersey, we are extremely fortunate to live in the most privileged circumstances while many people in other parts of the world struggle to survive.
Poverty and disease are widespread, especially in Africa. Extreme poverty is a major driver in the conflicts that plague many countries. Many of those nations have minimal resources, while others struggle with corruption and foreign exploitation. Meanwhile, the United States is still the richest nation, and we have a great amount of influence. We should be leading the effort to give each person the chance to live a decent life.
The ONE campaign (www.one.org) is leading the effort to end extreme poverty in ways that are culturally sensitive and sustainable. "Electrify Africa" legislation is on tap in both the House and Senate. Please visit one.org to learn how you can be part of the solution!
