MONROE, NJ - The East Brunswick High School Bears football team took to the road for a Friday evening tilt against the Falcons of Monroe High School on Oct. 4. The Bears were looking to capitalize on last week's victory over North Brunswick, and create some momentum for the middle of their season.
But a string of second-quarter turnovers doomed the Bears, and the Falcons cruised to a large halftime lead before defeating the Bears 44-0 on their home field.
The first quarter saw the Falcons, who came into the game leading the Greater Middlesex Conference in scoring average at over 45 points per game moving the ball, but the Bears defense stiffened, and the Falcons had to settle for a field goal and an early 3-0 lead. The turnovers then began, and between an interception that led to a touchdown, and two fumbled kickoffs, the Falcons had consistently short fields to navigate, and by the time halftime arrived, it was 37-0.
An early third quarter touchdown raised their lead to 44-0, and by then the backups got some playing time, and the clock kept moving, mercifully ending the night for a hard fighting, but clearly overmatched Bears team. The Bears dropped to a record of 1-3, while the Falcons increased their unbeaten mark to 4-0.
The Bears take next week off, and then look to bounce back against Manalapan High School at 7:00 P.M.on October 18.
