MOUNTAIN LAKES, NJ - Sophomore Laura Barber scored in her varsity debut and Chatham also received goals from veterans Emily Walczyk and Kelsey Burke to defeat Mountain Lakes, 3-0, on Wednesday in its regular-season finale.
Chatham travels to Morris Hills for the opening round of the state tournament, a 2 p.m. start on Monday.
Barber scored the final goal for Chatham on a well-struck corner kick taken by senior Lindsey Carson.
"The set piece was set by a wonderful display of individual skill by newcomer Laura Barber, who won a corner kick for the Cougars," Chatham coach Chris Mazurkiewicz said. "Lindsey Carson took the corner kick and served a beautiful ball to the top of the 6-yard box. The ball was neatly collected by Barber and deposited the ball in the back of the net for her first varsity goal in her first varsity game."
Walczyk had staked Chatham to a 1-0 lead in the first half when she fired in a shot from the corner of the penalty area.
"Chatham's Kara McMahon was key in the game, winning multiple balls in the back and starting the Chatham attack.," Mazurkiewicz said.
Chatham goalies Casey Madura and Caroline Viscovich combined for six saves for the shutout.
