Westfield Students Return to School

WESTFIELD, NJ—All Westfield Public Schools were open today—a first since Superstorm Sandy struck the region.
Westfield High School, Edison Intermediate School and Roosevelt Intermediate School reopened Thursday with a delayed opening due to snow, while the elementary schools remained closed due to safety hazards in the surrounding areas.
“The areas around all of the schools were monitored daily for the progress made by the utility companies,” explained Westfield Police Chief David Wayman. “Yesterday a joint decision was made by the Board of Education and the Westfield Police Department that the progress made over the last couple days was sufficient to deem the immediate area around all of the schools safe.”
Students absent today or yesterday either because their route was unsafe or because their families had planned vacations during the now-cancelled teachers’ convention will not be penalized for missing school.
While school streets and nearby areas have been deemed safe, recovery and restoration efforts by the town and utility companies continue. Richard Mattessich, president of the Westfield Board of Education, is urging people to use caution en route to and from school.
