WEST ORANGE, NJ - The search for a new West Orange school superintendent will begin next Monday.
Jane Kershner, a search consultant from New Jersey School Boards Association, will be in attendance from 7 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium at West Orange High School, 51 Conforti Ave. to explain the process and timeline, answer questions, and receive input from the community as to what should be expected of the new Superintendent.
Current Interim Superintendent James O'Neill will be retained by the West Orange School District through August, 2014.
Former Superintendent, Dr. Anthony Cavanna, was placed on paid administrative leave on July 19, 2012 pending an investigation into matters that were not publicly discussed.
On Aug. 7, 2012, O'Neill was named Interim Superintendent at a per diem rate of $673.07. His contract was extended through August of 2014.
Cavanna's resignation was accepted by the board on October 22, 2012, and his relationship with the school district ended on December 31, 2012.
New superintendents must be hired at a yearly salary of $175,000 according to the salary cap set by Gov. Chris Christie. West Orange can pay up to $177,500 because the district has a high school. How this will affect the pool of applicants for the superintendent search has not been determined. Dr. Cavanna's salary while West Orange School District Superintendent was $231,138. While O'Neill was Superintendent in the Chatham School District, his salary was $210,058. O'Neill retired from the Chatham district after unsuccessfully attempting to overturn Gov. Christie's $175,000 salary cap.
