Blackouts Continue in Westfield as Repairs are Made

WESTFIELD, NJ—Two weeks after Sandy struck, Westfield isn’t completely out of the dark yet.
“Several residents still do not have power at this time,” Fire Chief Daniel Kelly told TAP. In addition, as many have noticed, “We’ve experienced periodic blackouts in Westfield and neighboring towns yesterday and today.”
Kelly explained that PSE&G’s substations and equipment suffered major damage during the storm. Once power is back at full capacity, weaker parts of the system fail, causing the outages.
Westfielders should expect periodic outages as work continues although, Kelly said, “We hope that they become less frequent.”
Meanwhile, Kelly noted that the department of public works is working six to seven days a week cleaning up from the storm.
“I want to thank the residents for their patience,” said Kelly, who himself has worked tirelessly throughout the recovery process. He is thankful, he said, that “at this point, none of our first responders have sustained any injuries.”
