WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield and Plainfield have won the spot for Best High School Football Rivalry in New Jersey in contest being run by USA TODAY. The two local teams beat out competing teams by a landslide, with 50 percent of the vote in NJ—23,212. It was the second-highest vote total in the United States, according to Westfield Athletic Director Sandra Mamary.
The 51 state winners (including rivals from Washington, D.C.) will now advance to one of eight regionals. The winners of the eight regions, along with two wild cards, will move onto a final round of 10.
The winner will receive $5,000 to be split evenly between the two schools, with other cash prizes to be awarded to all of the national finalists.
“This is a storied tradition with the Plainfield Cardinals and Westfield Blue Devils playing football for over 100 years on Thanksgiving Day,” Mamary told The Alternative Press. “There are thousands of fans every year at the game, generations in attendance.”
Westfield will play Plainfield on Thanksgiving this year at 11 a.m at Kehler Stadium.
Voting for round two in the contest begins on Monday, Dec. 2. For more information and to vote, click here.
