WESTFIELD, NJ -- Sunshine spread over the diamond as Westfield High School’s boys varsity baseball team claimed a strong 9-2 victory over Roselle Catholic High School in their game on April 28.
WHS took a strong early lead, with a 6-0 lead at the bottom of the first inning, securing the lead with RBIs from players Tyler Bowman and Jake Greenberg. Strong pitching by Kevin Galasso allowed no runs in the first inning and helped maintain Westfield's six-point lead.
“I think I pitched really well,” Galasso said later. “At first I couldn’t find the strike zone, but once I started striking, I felt pretty good." With three strikeouts, Coach Bob Brewster commended Galasso on his performance.
Strong plays included three RBIs from Jake Greenberg and two from Quinn Dursee, both of which contributed to the incredible six-run first inning. Later on, a homerun slam by Matt Storks secured the victory.
“We came away with a win,” said Brewster. “The team holds the title of standing champions for the county, so their performance today had to reflect that."
This game puts the team at a 7-8 win lose, setting the team to once again contest for the county title. This is a comeback from recent losses against South Plainfield and Bridgewater.
This latest victory pleased Brewster. “We’re still not where we need to be, but we’re getting there,” he commented. The next game is scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on April 30 against rival team Scotch Plains.
