Walsh Breaks Own Record in Winning Hurdles; Vena Sets School Mark in 400

TOMS RIVER, NJ - John Walsh set a school record in winning the 55-meter hurdles, Andrew Vena set the school mark in the 400 and Dominic Vernazza placed in three events Saturday, leading Chatham to a third-place finish in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 2 indoor track sectionals held in the Bennett Center.
It marked the best-ever finish for Chatham at the indoor sectionals. Chatham tied for third with Madison, accumulating 40 points.
Walsh broke his previous school mark of 7.94 by winning the 55-meter hurdles in 7.88. The senior also took third in the high jump with a leap of 5-10.
Vena placed fourth in the 400-meter race in as school-record time of 51.94 Vernazza earned third place in the 1600 in 4:30.02 and fourth place in 800 in 2:02.23. He also was part of the 4x400 relay team that placed fourth.
Will Mitchell clocked 9:50.42 to finish third in the 3200 for Chatham and the 4x400 relay team of Andrew Vena, Parth Shah, Dom Vernazza and Kevin Gesell gained fourth place with a season-best time of 3:36.81.
Other outstanding performances by Chatham included: Phil Heller, 8th in 55-meter hurdles in 8.48; Pat Mortensen, personal record in 1600 at 4:58 (14th); Grant Hauck, super run in 3200 for 7th place in 10:08 (faster than winning time in 2013); Kevin Gesell, 8th in 800 in 2:03.64; Nick Ferrone, personal record in 55 at 7.04 (13th);
Parth Shah, 4:44 in 1600 (9th); Ed Dennerlein, 11th in shot put at 38' 7."
