SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The South Orange Police Department has released its annual Internal Affairs Division report, which detailed the suspension of two officers last year.

The report is required by law to inform the public about any policy violations by police officers during the last calendar year that resulted in a suspension greater than 10 days.

“Unfortunately, we had two officers suspended for more than 10 days last year,” Police Chief Jim Chelel said.  “One was for driving a police vehicle in an unsafe manner, and the other was for violating the department’s sick day policy.”

The former suspension was for 30 days, while the latter was for 52 days.

The report became mandatory following an order by the state attorney general’s office in 2011.

Chelel said that he was not at liberty to release the names or any personal information of the officers in question other than what is in the report.
