Catholic Family and Community Services through its Meals on Wheels Program last year delivered 20,938 meals and served 20,950 meals at the Sussex County Congregate nutrition sites to more than 450 Sussex County Seniors.  This is in addition to providing Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, hygiene products and safety devices such as smoke detectors.  125  clients received presents at Christmas and 52 senior’s pets received donated pet food.  We have approximately 75 volunteers who provided 7800 hours of service to our seniors last year.
The first “meals on wheels’ were delivered in canteens to British servicemen during WW II.  In the United States the first formal program began in Philadelphia shut ins in the 1950’s.  Today’s vast network of local home delivered meal programs serve millions of seniors and others across the country.
March for Meals is an annual nation campaign to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on a local level.  Senior Nutrition Programs across the United States promote March for Meals in their local communities through public events, partnership with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives.   The campaign takes place in March because it was during that month that the law was enacted that included Senior Nutrition Programs in the Older Americans Act.
Mayors for meals is a component of March for Meals that utilizes the involvement of local Sussex County Mayors and other elected officials.  They deliver meals one day in March to show support of their local senior nutrition program.   In 2012 we had many mayors and local community leaders , elected officials , both state and local level and business leaders show up in support of our home bound seniors.
This year’s event will be Wednesday, March 20, 2013.
An integral part of this initiative includes the Pledge to end senior hunger in America by 2020.  Local Senior Nutrition programs encourage as many people as possible during the March for Meals event to sign the pledge and take action against senior hunger.  The pledge can be signed online at
We always are in need of volunteers in each Sussex County community to help deliver meals to our seniors. Should you wish to participate in March on Meals or wish to volunteer or have any further questions please contact Kathy Talmadge, Direct Care Manager at 97-209-0123
