Skin Cancer Awareness Event at Clark Pool on Saturday

CLARK, NJ – The Clark Community Pool will host a “Choose Your Cover” free skin cancer analyses and education event on Saturday, July 19 from noon to 3 p.m. The event is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of sun exposure and the need to take skin protection precautions while outdoors.
A Derma View Skin Analyzer machine will be used to conduct the analyses and identify areas of oily or damaged skin. Andrea Navas of the Union County Office of Health Management explained, “Not all skin damage is visible to the naked eye. The Derma View uses a black light to pinpoint problem areas.” The analysis is not designed to replace a full screening by a medical professional, but is used to raise awareness and promote the use of safe sun practices.
People who work or play outdoors, fair-skinned people who sunburn easily, and those with a family history of melanoma are at an increased risk of developing skin cancer – the most common form of cancer in the United States. Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays is one of the most preventable risk factors for melanoma and all types of skin cancer.
Covering the skin with long sleeve shirts and pants, wearing a wide brim hat, avoiding the sun by seeking shady areas, and liberally applying – and reapplying – a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher and avoiding indoor tanning beds are methods to reduce skin cancer risk.
The “Choose Your Cover” event is free and open to the public. The Clark Community Pool is located at 201 Oak Ridge Road. The first 20 attendees will receive a special gift bag with skin cancer promotional materials. All attendees will also qualify to enter a drawing for a gift basket courtesy of Clark Township Health Department.
The event is sponsored by the Clark Township Health Department and the Chronic Disease Coalition of Middlesex and Union Counties.
