SUMMIT, NJ - Tennis Player Caroline Sayre and Varsity Football running back Colm Dougherty have been named Summit High School Athletes of the Week, presented by The Alternative Press of Summit, for the week ending October 13.
Each week throughout the school year, one girl and boy athlete will be honored for distinguishing herself / himself in the arena of competition, in the classroom, and for demonstrating exemplary, Hilltopper-caliber sportsmanship and leadership qualities.
Sayre, a junior, plays second doubles for the girls’ tennis team, and teamed with Carly Leiter, to defeat both Chatham and Scotch Plains. Against a strong Chatham team currently favored to win the State Section Title, Sayre's strong play with her teammate Leiter earned the Hilltoppers their only victory of the day.
Coach Kristen Turturiello stated, “In a 4-1 loss, the second doubles was the only pair to win for Summit. In both matches, Caroline did not double fault once, she had numerous volleys for winners at the net, and was a very dominant player. More importantly, this team played JV last year, and this year finished fourth in the Union County Tournament.”
