New Providence Reds Sweep Stealth; Clinch #1 Seed For NJABL Metal Playoffs

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - In a rematch of last summer’s championship series, the New Providence Reds Baseball Team swept the Somerset Stealth in a doubleheader at New Providence High School on Sunday, July 20 to finish the regular season with a 16-2 record.
The Reds took game one by a score of 11-3 behind six solid innings from pitcher Doug Pastore, who allowed one earned run, while scattering five hits and striking out two. He finished the regular season with a record of 5-1 and a 2.06 ERA.
At the plate for the Reds, Charles Savite continued his hot hitting going 1-2 with a run scored, two RBI and two walks. Savite just finished his sophomore season as the starting first baseman for the Moravian College Greyhounds baseball team, where he hit .343 and drove in 47 runs.
Catcher Will Anderson also went 1-2 with a run scored, an RBI double, a walk, hit by pitch and two stolen bases. Anderson just finished his freshman season at Gettysburg College where he hit .455 and drove in four runs.
Marc Giacalone and Billy Holden added two hits apiece for the Reds.
In game two for the Reds, Tommy Natale-Drown went 5 1/3 innings, striking out two and allowing three earned runs while scattering six hits. He finished the regular season with a 5-0 record. Natale-Drown just finished his sophomore season at Moravian College as well, where he had an ERA of 3.52 out of the bullpen.
Giacalone pitched the last 1 1/3 innings to pick up his first save of the season. Giacalone will play at St. Joseph’s University next season.
At the plate the Reds were led by outfielder Nick Potouridis, who went 3-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Outfielder Dave DeRosa finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and two doubles. Savite and Anderson added two more hits apiece in game two.
During the regular season the Reds had winning streaks of nine games and five games. Both Pastore and Natale-Drown led the team in victories (5), Savite led the team in hits (27) and RBI’s (20), DeRosa was tied for the team and league lead with fellow Red Carlo Romano in stolen bases (11), and Anderson led the team in average (.690) and homeruns (2).
The Reds will open up the playoffs with a home game this Sunday July 27. First pitch is scheduled for noon at New Providence High School.
