Montclair H.S. All Class Reunion Less Than a Week Away
Sunday, July 13, 2014 • 10:25pm
Have you missed the Montclair High School All Class Reunion the past 4 years? If so, you’re in for a treat. The Montclair High School All Class Reunion is less than a week away.
The free event, now in its fourth year, was built upon the idea that everyone of all classes should get together more frequently. Proving to be an event that gains momentum each time, the committee, that includes Toi Blount, has been working to ensure that reunion-goers have a weekend full of fun activities.
Over five years ago, a group of Montclair high school alumni reconnected in a Mountie-only web group. As the group members began to reminisce about their days at Montclair High School and the good times that they had growing up in Montclair. They often longed for the good old days and decided to re-create their fondest Montclair memories by getting together. As the group began to plan on how and where to get together, they soon realized that the list of invitees grew longer. From that idea, a reunion committee was formed. Suddenly the committee realized that they should plan a high school reunion, not just for their classes, but for everyone who ever graduated from Montclair High School in the school’s 100 year history.
Originally planned as an annual event at West Orange’s Eagle Rock Reservation in 2009, the group returned in 2010. Recognizing that Montclair High School alumni were living all over the country and it might create a hardship for some to travel as frequently, the committee decided that they should plan the reunion for every other year as well as move it to Montclair. What originally started as a one day cookout in 2009, is now in its fourth year, has become a biennial event and has evolved into a three-day weekend that is completely free of charge.
"It made more sense for us to bring it back home to Montclair. In 2012, we intentionally decided to skip a year because we didn't want it to get old," said reunion organizer Toi Blount. “The plan was to do it every other year going forward because we want people to feel encouraged and eager to attend. We wanted to make this a free event, unlike other reunions that may have a high per-person fee, so that everyone, no matter where they are socio-economically at the time, is able to attend."
The Montclair High School All Class Reunion committee consists of ten members, including Blount . "We are always open to volunteers and support. If anyone wants to get involved, we always need help with set up and clean-up at Nishuane Park or with coordinating the other events."
Blount says, "We intentionally tried to make everything free, from the tours, to the reunion, to the brunch and meet & greet are all no charge.” “The only thing that is at cost is the alumni basketball game, which will help offset the cost of the game venue,” Blount continued. “The weekend festivities are mostly funded through our T-shirt sales which is why they’re $20. Out of the money from the T-shirt sales, we also give a $1000 scholarship to a graduating Montclair High School senior annually." On June 5th, Salena Rovira became the recipient of the 2014 scholarship.
The weekend celebration will began on Friday, July 18 and culminate on Sunday, July 20 with something for everyone. The schedule of activities is as follows:
