MOUNTAIN LAKES, NJ - Mountain Lakes Rowing Club, a rowing club comprised of 65 students from local high schools and coached by Robert Welsh sent 4 boats to the 18th Annual 2014 Youth National Rowing Championships in Rancho Cordova, CA this past weekend and came home victorious. Athletes from 133 clubs and high school rowing programs from 106 cities in 26 states competed for titles in the A, B and C finals in this national competition.
The “Mens Lightweight Youth 4+” rowed by: Adam Kaufmann (Mountain Lakes High School), Sam Albregts (Mountain Lakes High School), Dylan Conlin (Mountain Lakes High School), CJ Gallo (Mountain Lakes High School) and Olivia Reiter as coxswain (Summit, Kent Place School), placed 5th in their “A” division beating all 6 boats in the B final and 6 boats in the C final making it to the A final. Having only practiced together for 4 weeks, and racing only 3 times as a boat, they found their swing and beat rivals who have been practicing together for years. They came in 5th to teams from the Pacific Northwest, a remarkable feat as they couldn’t get into the waters of Lake Hopatcong until April because of the icy and frigid weather conditions.
In one of the toughest catagories, “Mens Youth 4+” placed 12th in the “B” final, rowing against both Northwest and East Coast teams. Their team was comprised of Alan Horst (Mountain Lakes High School), Alex Hedge (Morristown High School) Luke Graham (Mountain Lakes High School) and Maxim Zwarycz (Delbarton) and Jack Conlin as coxswain (Mountain Lakes High School).
The Men's Ltwt Youth 8+, comprising of John Davis (Chatham High School), Patrick Ippolito (Mountain Lakes High School), Grant Gemici (Mountain Lakes High School),
Cal Brady (Morristown High School), Brian Fitzgerald (Mendham High School),
Chris Loeber (Seton Hall Prep), Nick Gockel (Delbarton), Bohdan Ruehle (Kinnelon High School) and coxswain: ME Roos (Mountain Lakes High School) placed 20th in the “C” final.
The “Womens Youth 4+” consisting of Maddy Endres (Villa Walsh Academy), Libby Costello (Mountain Lakes High School), Isabella St. Onge (Bernardsville High School), Sabrina Marki (Oak Knoll School), and coxed by Emily Oram (Villa Walsh Academy) placed 28th beating a rival team, Blair Academy.
