Livingston Public School Updates for June 2014

LIVINGSTON, NJ - It is almost the end of the school year, but Livingston Public Schools (LPS) still has a lot on the agenda. Below are some recent updates:
Get Ready for Middle School: As seniors prepare for their final goodbyes, fifth and sixth grade students are getting ready to move up to the next phases of their education. In June, parents can learn what to expect at Mt. Pleasant Middle School and Heritage Middle School. Orientation programs will be at 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, June 4, at Heritage; and 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, June 12, at Mt. Pleasant Middle.
The ABCs of Kindergarten: Elementary schools are hosting orientation programs for some of the newest learners—the Class of 2027. Find the schedule for kindergarten meetings by school by clicking HERE.
PRIDE Presents an Open House: A five-day preschool program is being offered by Livingston Public Schools beginning in September that will integrate children with special needs with regular education students. Learn more about the program at an open house at 1:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., on Friday, June 6, at Burnet Hill Elementary School. The classes are located at Burnet Hill for children who turn three or four before October 1, 2014.
Learn More about Special Education : Members of the LPS Student Services Department will present an overview at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4 to share information on special education programs and the IEP process. NOTE: The site for the meeting has been changed to Mt. Pleasant Middle School.
Next BOE Meeting : The Livingston Board of Education will meet at 7:00 p.m., on Monday, June 2, at Riker Hill Elementary School. See the agenda by clicking HERE.
Subscription Busing: Subscription busing is available on a lottery basis for LPS students who are not eligible for free busing. Applications are due June 30. Click HERE for the application.
Interested in Serving on the School Board?: Prospective candidates must file a nominating petition by July 28 with the Office of the Essex County Clerk. Email Joann Goldberg, firstname.lastname@example.org, administrative assistant to the LPS business administrator, to receive a copy of the official county petition form. The election is Tuesday, November 4.
Live Telethon and Celebration of the LHS Television Program: A live telethon and celebration of the LHS television program, presented by LTV and Livingston Education Foundation, will bring viewers 13 hours of programming from 11:00 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, June 7. The program will showcase productions from current students and LHS alumni, in addition to live performances.
Bike Livingston: Bike Livingston, a family-oriented bike tour through some of Livingston’s beautiful neighborhoods, will be held on Sunday, June 8. The event is free, but pre-registration is recommended. Register by clicking HERE.
India Fest: The India Fest will be held on Sunday, June 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the West Essex YMCA. This colorful cultural celebration will feature Indian food, dance and music. Find more information at www.SanskritiofNJ.org.
Cub Scout Info Session: Learn what Cub Scouting is all about on Saturday, June 14, where Cub Scout Pack 59 will be hosting a free spring barbecue for families in Livingston with boys in elementary school. Safety Town: Safety Town is a summer program for preschoolers to help them get ready for kindergarten. A small town is set up with streets, crosswalks, streetlights, stop signs and buildings. Children are taught how to cross the streets, be safe on school buses, and walk to school. The two-week session for children ages five and six will be at 10:00 a.m. to noon, from Monday, August 4 to Friday, August 15. The cost is $50 per child.
