WEST ORANGE, NJ - "Goddess on Earth: Women of Essex County," a multi-media installation by photographer Lisa Levart, will open with a reception on Saturday, March 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Luna Stage, 555 Valley Road in West Orange. The reception is free and open to the public.
Goddess on Earth is a continuing multi-media installation by award-winning photographer Lisa Levart that features contemporary women and girls photographed as ancient female mythic figures that personify strength and self-esteem.
The "muses 'selected by Levart for the Luna Stage exhibit are broad and varied. They include Suzanne Douglas, an award-winning film, television and Broadway actress. Douglas is photographed as Minerva, Roman goddess of Wisdom.
Cameron Boyle of Montclair is the director and founder of CRIANSA Connection, a charitable organization that facilitates relationships between American and Brazilian youth via pen pal relationships and cultural exchanges. For the past ten years, Boyle and her family have run summer camp programs in Cumbuco and Jericoacoara, Brazilian fishing villages. Boyle portrays Lemanja, Brazilian Goddess of the Sea, with her daughter Giovanna.
Diana Rolanda Moise is a 12-year-old 7th grade student at Liberty Middle School in West Orange. She was born in Newark and moved to her family's native Haiti when she was two. When Diana was 9, the devastating earthquake in Haiti forced her family back to the United States, where she has triumphed in her struggles to learn English, and endure multiple scoliosis surgeries, all while still dreaming of her return to Haiti. Diana Moise portrays Erzulie, Haitian Spirit Protectress of Women.
In addition to Douglas, Boyle and Moise, other images will be featured from Levart's book "Goddess on Earth, Portraits of the Divine Feminine," (GOLD Nautilus Book Award in 2012).
