First Congregational Church of Westfield Presents Forum on Practice & Perception of Islam
Monday, April 21, 2014 • 1:33pm
As part of an ongoing exploration of the Islamic faith, First Congregational Church of Westfield will host a special presentation by Sami Catovic, Executive Director of the New Brunswick Islamic Center, on Wednesday, April 30, at 7:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public.
One of the three major Abrahamic religions, along with Christianity and Judaism, Islam is considered the world’s fastest growing faith. Guest presenter Sami Catovic will speak about some of Islam’s basic foundations, as well as how it is practiced and perceived both here and in other parts of the world.
An attorney and former member of the Executive Committee of the Islamic Society of North America, Mr. Catovic is completing a Ph.D in religious studies at Temple University. Following his presentation, there will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion.
"In light of the growth and importance of Islam throughout the world, we believe it's critical for Christians and non-Christians alike to develop greater awareness and understanding of it," said Rev. Dr. Mark Boyea, FCC Senior Minister. "The dialogue we have begun with this nearby Muslim community is an essential step in that direction, as well as in keeping with our longstanding tradition of being a fully open, inclusive and ecumenical faith community."
