On Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club will present An Evening with Venerable Metteyya Sakyaputta, who will lead a unique dialogue on meditation and spiritual growth from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Chelsea (295 South Ave.) in Fanwood.
Metteyya born in Lumbini, Nepal, the birthplace of the Buddha. At the age of nine, he started studying and practicing meditation under the Venerable Sujata for nine years. Long involved in social service work in the community, he founded Metta Children's School at the age of 15. The school has now grown to two branches and provides free education to over 800 impoverished local children.
Venerable Metteyya eventually decided that the best path for social work was to become a Buddhist monk and was ordained as such in Nepal in early 2007. Metteyya was featured on the recent PBS documentary "The Buddha."
Members of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club are part of a diverse group of professional leaders working to address various community and international service needs and to promote peace and understanding throughout the world.
