CHATHAM, NJ - Sophomore guard Cassandra Falone scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the second half to spark the Chatham girls basketball team past Mount Olive, 54-37, in the team's home opener Monday.
Chatham (2-0) scored the first 14 points of the third quarter to open up a 41-16 lead.
"Our third quarter was fantastic," Chatham coach Joe Gaba said. "We got some easy transition baskets, we got a nice spot-up three from Cas (Falone), Colleen (Mulvaney) did some really good damage on the boards. The third quarter was huge for us."
Colleen Mulvaney, who finished with 10 points, got Chatham started in the second half when she scored inside off a pass from Olivia Diaz-Saavedra. Falone then hit a baseline jumper before Shea Matta dropped in a basket off a pass from Natalie Washuta. Falone then hit a driving bank shot off a feed from Diaz-Saavedra.
Falone followed with a 3-pointer from the corner and then converted a fast-break layup off a Washuta pass. The run ended with a Diaz-Saavedra free throw.
Natalie Washuta, who had 9 points, sums up the game in the video below:
"We're a team of unknowns. It could be a different kid each night," Gaba said. "We were just talking about trusting each other, trusting me, trusting the system and trusting themselves. If we do that, we'll be able to sneak up on some people and cause some damage for sure."
